Stress & Burnout Counselling
Stress and burnout can leave you feeling emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed, disconnected or as though you're constantly trying to keep up. The pressure may come from work, caring responsibilities, relationships, difficult life circumstances or simply carrying too much for too long.
I offer confidential counselling for adults experiencing stress, burnout and emotional exhaustion. Sessions are available online across the UK, by telephone, and face-to-face in Ashford, Kent.
Counselling provides a calm, non-judgemental space to explore what may be contributing to your stress or burnout. Together, we can look at patterns such as people-pleasing, perfectionism, workplace pressure or carrying too much for too long, and begin finding more sustainable ways forward.
When Does Stress Become Burnout?
Stress and burnout are closely related, but they are not always the same experience. Stress can involve feeling under pressure, anxious or unable to switch off, while burnout may develop after prolonged periods of emotional or physical strain without enough opportunity to recover.
You may still be functioning at work or managing day-to-day responsibilities while feeling increasingly exhausted, detached, irritable or unlike yourself. Burnout does not always mean reaching a point where you can no longer function.
What Are the Signs of Stress and Burnout?
Stress affects everyone differently. While some pressure can feel manageable
short-term, ongoing stress without adequate support or recovery can eventually
lead to burnout.
Burnout is more than simply feeling tired. It can impact emotional wellbeing,
relationships, confidence, physical health, and your ability to function day to day.
Stress and burnout can look different from person to person. Some common signs include:
-
Constant exhaustion or emotional fatigue
-
Anxiety or feeling permanently “on edge”
-
Difficulty sleeping or switching off
-
Feeling emotionally numb or detached
-
Loss of motivation or enjoyment
-
Irritability or frustration
-
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
-
Feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities
-
Work-related stress or pressure
-
Physical symptoms such as headaches, tension, fatigue, or panic
Many people experiencing burnout feel guilty for struggling or believe they should simply “cope better.”
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) recognises counselling as an effective way to support emotional wellbeing, stress management, and mental health during periods of overwhelm.

What Might We Work on in Counselling?
Therapy provides a space to pause, reflect, and begin understanding the impact prolonged stress may be having on your mental and emotional wellbeing.
As an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, I tailor therapy to your individual experiences and needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Counselling may help you to:
-
Understand the causes of stress and burnout
-
Recognise unhealthy emotional or behavioural patterns
-
Develop healthier coping strategies
-
Improve emotional regulation and resilience
-
Explore boundaries and work-life balance
-
Reduce anxiety and overwhelm
-
Reconnect with yourself emotionally
-
Improve confidence and self-worth
-
Feel calmer, more grounded, and more in control
Many people find relief simply from having a confidential space where they can speak openly without pressure, expectation, or judgement.
Experience Supporting People Under Pressure
Alongside my counselling work, I have over 20 years of experience across healthcare, leadership, public health, hospice services, and emotionally demanding professional environments.
This experience has given me a strong understanding of the pressures many people face within caring professions, leadership roles, high-responsibility environments, and emotionally intensive work settings. I understand how easily stress can build when people spend long periods supporting others while neglecting their own emotional needs.
Counselling for Workplace Stress and Burnout
Work can become a significant source of emotional pressure, particularly when expectations are high, boundaries are difficult to maintain or the working environment feels unsupportive.
You may be dealing with excessive workload, difficult workplace relationships, leadership pressure, imposter syndrome, redundancy, a toxic workplace or simply feeling unable to switch off when the working day ends.
Counselling can provide space to understand how work is affecting you, explore the boundaries and expectations around your role, and consider what needs to change for life to feel more sustainable.

How Can Private Counselling Help With Stress and Burnout?
Private counselling provides a confidential space to step away from everyday pressures and explore what may be contributing to your stress or burnout. Rather than simply finding ways to push through, counselling can help you understand the emotional, behavioural and practical patterns that may be leaving you depleted.
We might explore work pressure, perfectionism, people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, relationship stress, caring responsibilities, anxiety or the feeling that you always need to keep going.
The aim is not to tell you how to live your life, but to help you understand what you need, recognise what may need to change and develop healthier ways of responding to pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is burnout the same as stress?
Not exactly. Stress often involves feeling under pressure or overwhelmed, while burnout can develop after prolonged stress and may involve emotional exhaustion, reduced motivation, detachment and difficulty recovering even when you try to rest.
Do I need to be diagnosed with burnout before starting counselling?
No. You do not need a diagnosis or label before seeking counselling. If stress, exhaustion or emotional overwhelm is affecting your wellbeing, relationships or ability to cope, we can begin by exploring what you are experiencing.
Can counselling help with work-related burnout?
Counselling can help you explore the emotional impact of workplace pressure, understand patterns such as perfectionism or difficulty setting boundaries, and consider healthier ways of responding to the demands you are facing.
Can I have burnout counselling online?
Yes. I offer confidential online counselling for stress and burnout across the UK and internationally, alongside telephone counselling and face-to-face sessions in Ashford, Kent.
